Introduction
All researchers and scholars are aware of the importance of a
good reading list or an exhaustive bibliography on a given subject.
The present bibliography on the Dewey Decimal Classification system
is compiled of items collected from standard information sources:
e.g., ERIC, Library Literature (LL), Library and Information Science
Abstracts (LISA), Wilson Periodical Index, and the Wayne State
University Online Public Access Catalog. Several original documents
were also searched for physical verification and as a source of
additional citations. No bibliography is complete and exhaustive;
however, an attempt has been made to make the present one as comprehensive
as possible.
Arrangement
This reading list is divided into three sections: the Bibliography
Section, the Subject Index, and the Author Index.
Bibliography Section
The Bibliography Section is arranged first by date of publication,
then alphabetically by author's last name. Bibliographic items
are numbered consecutively.
In addition to standard bibliographic information, each bibliographic
item includes subject headings. The subject headings are given
at the end of each item. They are listed in alphabetical order
followed by form of literature (e.g., biography) and geographical
area (e.g., China), if relevant. The terms "Expansion"
and "Modifications" found in these subject headings
are used for expansions and changes made by individual countries
or libraries to accommodate the scheme to their literature. The
term "Revisions" is used for official changes made and
published by the editors and OCLC Forest Press. All of these subject
headings can be found in the Subject Index.
The Subject Index lists the subject headings included in the
Bibliograhy Section; relevant main class and division numbers
and headings; and subject headings related to DDC as a general
classification system. The numbers in the Index correspond to
the bibliographic item numbers in the Bibliography Section.
Since the Bibliography is about the DDC, the heading DDC is not
used by itself in the Subject Index. DDC is used before main class
numbers, division numbers, and headings, e.g., DDC 500, DDC -
Natural Sciences; DDC 370, DDC - Education. Therefore, if users
are interested in a DDC main class or division, they should look
under DDC and the relevant class number or heading. "See"
and "See also" references are given whenever necessary.
All popular classification systems are identified in the Subject
Index by their abbreviations: Colon Classification (CC); Dewey
Decimal Classification (DDC); Library of Congress Classification
(LCC); and Universal Decimal Classification (UDC).
Whenever the DDC Edition number is clear, it is given as a subject
heading, e.g., "Edition 15", "Edition 18".
General subject headings, such as history and philosophy, are
listed separately. They are not to be confused with DDC schedule
subjects.
The Author Index lists all authors in alphabetical order. The
numbers correspond to the bibliographic item numbers in the Bibliographic
Section.
I hope this bibliography will serve well students, scholars,
researchers and others interested in the Dewey Decimal Classification.
Any comments or suggestions regarding the bibloiography are welcome.
